When Your Birth Plan Falls Apart, Trusting God With the Unexpected
What do you do when everything you planned for your birth suddenly becomes impossible?
For many women, pregnancy is a sacred season of preparation. You research your options, choose your provider, visualize your birth environment, and create a plan that reflects your values. You picture peace, support, and a smooth unfolding.
But what happens when none of it goes according to plan?
Brie’s story is a powerful reminder that even when doors close and plans unravel, God is still present. Not just present, but actively working behind the scenes to write something more beautiful than we could have imagined.
A Dream for Natural Birth
In 2020, during the height of COVID, Brie found herself pregnant with her first baby in a world filled with uncertainty. Hospitals felt restrictive and unpredictable. Stories circulated of women laboring alone, wearing masks while pushing, and navigating constantly changing protocols.
Like many women who value physiological birth, Brie desired something different.
She longed for a natural, low-intervention experience. A space where her body could do what it was designed to do without unnecessary interference.
After prayer and discussion, she and her husband chose a birth center. It offered the comfort of home with the safety of trained midwives. Dim lighting, freedom of movement, and a peaceful environment.
Everything felt aligned.
When Things Don’t Go As Planned
Early in her pregnancy, Brie learned her baby was in a breech position. While this can be common earlier on, most babies turn head-down before labor begins.
Her midwives reassured her. There was still time.
But as the weeks passed, her baby remained breech.
She could feel the baby trying to move, shifting and pressing in uncomfortable ways, but always returning to the same position.
Eventually, the suggestion came to attempt an external cephalic version, a procedure where a doctor manually tries to turn the baby from the outside.
But Brie hesitated.
Deep down, she felt a conviction that her baby was positioned this way for a reason. Instead of forcing a change, she chose to trust.
Understanding Breech Birth
In modern obstetrics, breech presentation is often treated as high risk. Many providers default to cesarean delivery due to training limitations and hospital protocols.
But historically, breech birth was not uncommon. Skilled providers were trained to support vaginal breech deliveries, allowing the body to work naturally.
Today, the challenge is not always the body’s ability, but the system’s limitations.
Brie found herself caught in that gap.
When Options Disappear
As she reached full term, reality set in.
Due to state regulations, her midwives could no longer legally attend her birth if the baby remained breech.
Suddenly, the peaceful birth center experience she had envisioned was no longer an option.
Determined to stay aligned with her values, Brie began calling midwives across the state.
She hoped someone would say yes.
Instead, she encountered resistance.
Some questioned her choices. Others warned her of risks. One even told her she would inevitably end up in surgery.
Each conversation left her more discouraged.
Instead of support, she felt alone.
Crying Out to God
In one of her lowest moments, Brie found herself on her knees, crying out in prayer.
This was not how she imagined her pregnancy ending.
The plan she had carefully built was falling apart.
But in that place of surrender, something shifted.
She released control.
She stopped trying to force an outcome.
And she invited God into the unknown.
A Divine Appointment
Reluctantly, Brie scheduled an appointment with a doctor to discuss her options.
She expected pressure to induce or schedule a cesarean.
She expected fear-based recommendations.
But what she encountered was completely unexpected.
This doctor was not only open to her concerns, he supported them.
Even more surprising, he revealed that he was the only provider in the state trained and willing to deliver a vaginal breech birth.
In a moment, everything changed.
The very thing she had been searching for was placed directly in front of her.
Not through striving, but through surrender.
God’s Plan Looks Different
This new path still required letting go.
She would now be delivering in a hospital, during COVID, with a provider she had just met.
It was not what she had planned.
But it was what she had been given.
And instead of resisting it, she chose to trust.
This is where many birth stories are transformed.
Not when everything goes perfectly, but when we shift from control to surrender.
Labor Begins at 42 Weeks
At 42 and a half weeks, labor finally began.
It started gently, with mild sensations that gradually built in rhythm and intensity.
Brie stayed home as long as possible, wanting to remain in a familiar, peaceful environment.
When her water broke, it was discolored with meconium, which can sometimes indicate stress in the baby.
For many women, this moment could trigger fear.
But Brie remained grounded.
She trusted her body.
She trusted the process.
The Hospital Experience No One Expects
When she arrived at the hospital, she encountered something rare.
Support.
Instead of being confined to a bed or pressured into interventions, she was given space.
A gentle nurse checked in occasionally but allowed her to labor naturally.
She moved freely. She labored in the tub. She leaned on her husband. She prayed.
This is a powerful reminder that your provider matters more than your location.
Even in a hospital setting, the right support can completely change your experience.
The Mindset Shift That Changed Everything
At around seven centimeters, labor intensified.
This is often the moment when doubt creeps in.
Brie felt it.
“I don’t know if I can do this,” she told her husband.
His response was simple.
“You don’t have a choice. You are doing this.”
It was not soft or poetic.
But it was exactly what she needed.
In that moment, something clicked.
She stopped questioning and started surrendering fully to the process.
Her body took over.
The Physiology of Surrender
When fear leaves the body, space is created for oxytocin, the hormone that drives labor.
This hormone thrives in safety, trust, and surrender.
As Brie shifted her mindset, her body responded.
Her labor progressed rapidly.
She moved intuitively, getting out of the tub, walking, swaying, and following her instincts.
With movement came progress.
With surrender came flow.
Transition and the Urge to Push
Soon, her body began to bear down naturally.
This urge is not something you force. It is something your body initiates.
It is a sign that your baby is descending and your body is ready.
As she walked the halls with her nurse, her labor advanced quickly.
Within a short time, she was complete.
It was time to meet her baby.
A Birth That Defied Expectations
Because of the breech position, she was taken to the operating room as a precaution.
The environment was not ideal. Bright lights, multiple observers, a less natural position.
But none of it distracted her.
She was focused. Grounded. fully present.
With just two pushes, her baby was born.
A healthy, natural breech birth.
Redemption in the Details
There is something deeply powerful about how God works in the details.
Despite being in a hospital, Brie experienced many elements she had hoped for.
Freedom of movement during labor
Minimal intervention
Skin-to-skin contact
Delayed cord clamping
A supportive provider
What seemed like a compromise turned into a beautiful fulfillment.
The Emotional Aftermath
After the birth, as she held her baby, the weight of the journey hit her.
Tears flowed.
Gratitude filled the room.
Her husband cried alongside her.
They had walked through uncertainty, fear, and surrender.
And they had come out on the other side with a story only God could write.
